Hi! I want to access some data that requires Controlled-Access Data Use Certificate. In the form to fill there is a ?Project Lead? field from where I understood that I would be that person since I would be accessing the data. Nevertheless, in the DUC this person is mentioned as ?Principal Investigator?. It would be okay if I am this Principal Investigator in the DUC as a PhD student/researcher? The project I am working on is something that I developed and it is funded by a scholarship, as a full PhD grant. My supervisor is supporting me with the equipment and techniques, but the field I am working is something that only I do here at our laboratory, so for this project in particular I am the project leader in some ways. Since I would be the only one accessing the data and doing preliminary analysis, I though that is more adequate to be me rather than my supervisor, but I am not sure if that is okay. Thank you in advance for the help! I already asked some months ago to the help center by no reply yet.

Hello, I'm sorry that you did not receive a response to your previous attempt at asking this question. Synapse does not define either term, and to the best of my knowledge, none of the portals and projects requiring a Data Use Certificate do either. It's common for the PI to be the Project Lead, but sometimes two different people are named. My best advice is to follow your institutional policies or perspectives regarding these roles and responsibilities. Generally, if your access request and DUC submission meets the requirements delineated in the instructions (e.g., a PI is named and signs, and a qualified Signing Official signs off as taking oversight responsibility), it should be accepted. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions. Thank you, Anthony on behalf of the Synapse Access & Compliance Team (ACT)
