Joshua Burkhart jgburk

As an Affiliate Assistant Professor, I serve as Principal Investigator of HAM-INBRE, a multi-institute clinical data science collaboration investigating Alzheimer's and Dementia comorbidities. My professional journey at U. Hawaii began as a postdoctoral researcher following the completion of my Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics at Oregon Health & Science University. In the Bioinformatics Core under Dr. Youping Deng, I led research projects investigating systems biology and immune checkpoint inhibitor response, and contributed to research of the urban 'ome. This work resulted in a first-authored publication in Patterns and a coauthored manuscript in Cell (under review). My doctoral fellowship was supported by a five-year T15 training grant awarded by the National Library of Medicine for Biomedical Informatics Data Science Research (https://www.nlm.nih.gov/ep/GrantTrainInstitute.html). I also received several separate travel and conference grants that afforded me opportunities to attend and participate in ISMB in Chicago, the U. Washington Summer Institute of Statistical Genetics in Seattle, and the Jackson Laboratory Annual Short Course on Experimental Models of Human Cancer in Bar Harbor. My dissertation investigated graph neural networks and their applications to biochemical reaction graphs and gene network analysis. While a doctoral student, I coauthored articles in PNAS, Nature Communications, Science Advances, and F1000 Research. Prior to pursuing my doctoral studies, I had eclectic and rewarding professional experiences working in landscape construction, healthcare, enterprise software development, and the Defense and Automotive industries. I worked most recently as a Software Engineer at Burke E. Porter Machinery Co. There, I developed industrial dynamometer software for customers including Chrysler, TATA, the California Air Resources Board, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and I coauthored my first publication in BMC Genomics. Further details of my academic research achievements are available in my SciENcv (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/joshua.burkhart.1/cv/604178/) and my relevant professional experiences are summarized in my resume (https://docs.google.com/file/d/1FAh6WYFJqVNWNok7aBbD3yBVdyXCbQpY/edit?usp=docslist_api&filetype=msword).
